{"id":2126,"date":"2020-01-24T12:06:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T17:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bobwolff.org\/?p=2126"},"modified":"2020-01-24T12:06:42","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T17:06:42","slug":"the-big-blender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bobwolff.org\/index.php\/2020\/01\/24\/the-big-blender\/","title":{"rendered":"The Big Blender"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve written often of the cadence of life, the rhythm of essentially every aspect of our time here on earth. Perhaps it is not always obvious or apparent \u2013 it may force you to pay closer attention to notice it and that is often for the good. The thing is though, we rarely take the time or opportunity to look. While I don\u2019t wish to generalize, I think many of us associate the concept of rhythm with absolutes: ebb and flow of the tide, coming and going of the seasons, hot and cold, light and dark\u2026sort of a digital on\/off one or the other type of rhythm, and while that is oft times true it is the macro view \u2013 the high level view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reality is that life\u2019s rhythms are\nalmost always more analog, consisting of discrete degrees, varying shades; they\nare blends of the poles, the extremes. Everything is a amalgam. Think of color,\nof how they combine and blend together to make new colors and tones such as how\nblue and yellow make green. In fact, what are the polar colors if not white and\nblack? And what is white but the blending of all the colors and black but the\nabsence of color? Think of your shower or bath water; hot or cold? Likely a\nblend of both isn\u2019t it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even joy and sorrow blend, and when\nthey do, we get life. Think about it dear reader, our lives are defined by\nneither happiness or grief but they certainly play a huge part in it. And when\nthe highest high comes, we cling to it and embrace it; we take mental pictures in\nan attempt to hold that moment forever. And when the lowest moments crash into\nour life, we wail and get angry and desperately try to escape its dark shadow.\nAnd in the end, after our time here, the highs and low will have blended\ntogether to create a lifetime. They\u2019ll have balanced our life. Not in the sense\nthat the good equaled the bad, the joys balanced the sorrows; it is not the witch\nand the duck scale of balance. (Probably an obscure reference to many \u2013 a \u201cbalance\u201d\nscene Monty Python and The Holy Grail \u2013 1) offered because I love Monty Python\nand 2) to honor the recent passing of Terry Jones.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much the same with time; time blends\ninto moments, scenes, and into a rhythm. For most all of my adult life, that rhythm\nwas all about working \u2013 getting up, going to work, working, and going home to\nprepare to do it all again. Money was tight for many years for me and I\nfiercely fought for every minute of overtime I could find in order to add a little\nextra to my wallet. I would work five days a week, but when they needed more\nand offered six or seven days a week, I was first in line. And I worked eight\nhours a day every day, but when they needed more hours worked in the day, I was\nfirst in line. So much of my personal \u201cblend\u201d those years was all about work.\nIt didn\u2019t define my life by any means, but it dominated those years. I worked\nand now I don\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The time in my life is still a blend,\nbut of other things. And it\u2019s funny, my last few years of work days were a\nblend but of issues, people problems, growth, training, budget, and that sort\nof thing and there were regular scheduled meetings to discuss each one of them \u2013\na rhythm. But it was a myriad of different things. Now all those things are gone\nand are replaced with almost nothing of any real significance. Weekends are all\nabout my grandkids; were when I worked and still are. But the weekdays are\nessentially \u201copen\u201d. It was different in the warmer weather: hiking, wood\ncutting and splitting, and yardwork eagerly gobbled up most all my free time,\ninterspersed with grocery shopping and similar mundane chores of life. But now\nsteeped in the cold of January (on any other winter I would have added an\nadjective such as bitter or frigid to better accentuate the cold, but not so\nmuch this year as it has only been tolerably cold \u2013 so far) I have little to do\noutdoors so there are some gaping holes left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t get me wrong \u2013 I worked my ass\noff for most of my entire life and I feel entitled to being able to park my\nbutt in a big soft chair and watch movies and play on my computer \u2013 I earned\nthat. And no better time to do so than January. But sitting is not a rhythm and\nis not a blend and is not good for a human. I\u2019ve painted one room and have the\nnext squarely in my sights, so I am trying! And there are plenty of other of\nhome projects waiting\u2026.once again, a blend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, when you really put your noodle\nto it, even blending has a blend: there is a macro level and a micro level.\nThere is the hourly blend and the lifelong blend, and every gradient imaginable\nin between. And what else but a blend are we? Atoms, molecules, genes, memories,\nand experiences? (If you haven\u2019t, please read <a href=\"http:\/\/bobwolff.org\/index.php\/2018\/02\/24\/the-sands-of-time\/\">The Sands of\nTime<\/a>). We are nothing if not a blend of our past. And as much as some folks\nloathe the notion, we are little more than a blend of our parents and their\nforefathers, of our life moments \u2013 conversations, interactions, and shared\nhistory \u2013 with friends, family, and others met along the path. We are mom\u2019s eyes\nand dad\u2019s dislike for spicy food; we are our 5<sup>th<\/sup> grade teacher\u2019s views\non \u201cTo Kill A Mockingbird\u201d; we are our wrestling coach\u2019s philosophy on perseverance\nand personal fortitude; we are our boss\u2019s view attitude on work ethic. We are a\nblend of nights skating on a pond in the woods in the moonlight; of a hot sun\nbalancing the cold ocean water at the beach; of the soft green grass cushioning\nour head as we laid upon watching the clouds drift past in the brilliant blue\nsky. We are all these moments magically blended together and transformed into\nthe unique person we are thanks to our personal ideas, beliefs, principles, and\nethics that season the blend within us. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve written often of the cadence of life, the rhythm of essentially every aspect of our time here on earth.
